Reflection
Living through the pandemic made it much harder to find an internship that related to what I
wanted to do in the future, so I instead decided to record my college class on game design.
I want to work in the game development industry, so this was my real first step forward into learning about it.
When this class first started, I didn't really know what to expect. I hoped that I would be able
to work on my own, since I didn't particularly enjoy working with other people.
Little did I know, I would be pushed out of my comfort zone many, many, times.
Every week, there was a project where I had to work with someone, whether I liked it or not.
It was difficult not being able to do as I wished with a project, because I now had other people's visions
on the project to worry about! I had to accept their ideas and blend mine in with theirs.
This proved to be rather difficult, as some people in my group barely knew anything about video games
or we had opposing views. There were even more challenges with time zones since it was online while the
college that hosted it was still locked down. It made projects challenging because they were made
for a classroom environment and not an online one.
As I learned more and more about game design, I slowly found myself taking on the role of leader,
even though I didn't really consider myself one before starting. I realized that
I was putting myself down too harshly, and that I could, in fact, work with a team and even organize one.
I learned a lot of things about game development that I didn't even consider before,
and saw that making games isn't just about the person who writes the story,
but it's about bringing in the artists, the writers, the programmers and designers together with the audience
to build an enjoyable, emotional, and entertaining experience.
This class was eye opening for me, and though I learned a lot about game design,
I believe I learned a lot about myself as well.
